Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Infinity War" made an estimated $630 million at the worldwide box office for its opening weekend, according to Disney (DIS). That shatters the record for biggest worldwide opening held by Universal's "The Fate of the Furious," which made $541 million for its global opening last year.
"Infinity War" also brought in an estimated $250 million domestically this weekend. That makes it the biggest opening weekend ever, edging out the $248 million that "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" made in 2015.
Disney now holds 9 of the top 10 biggest openings in North American history.
Most impressively, "Infinity War" nabbed the global record without the help of China, the world's second biggest movie market. The film opens there on May 11.
"Disney masterfully combined all of the separate elements of the Marvel brand and brought them together in an enormous and irresistible epic popcorn movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore (SCOR)
Dergarabedian added that "Infinity War" showcased the big screen experience in a way that audiences embraced, despite all of the competition from "an almost infinite array of options for on-demand entertainment."
The Marvel film brings together more than 20 of the brand's heroes including Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Evans' Captain America, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther.
"Infinity War" is the pinnacle of a decade's worth of characters and storylines for Disney's Marvel. The studio has been one of the biggest success stories in film history bringing in roughly $15.3 billion globally.
Going into this weekend, the domestic box office was down about 3% compared to last year, but thanks to the big opening from "Infinity War" the 2018 North American box office is now up 3%, according to comScore.
"One huge blockbuster can make all the difference at the yearly box office," Dergarabedian added. "'Infinity War' will effectively reverse the down trending box office we've seen so far this year and get the industry on track setting the stage for what could be a big summer."

STAN LEE IS COMING TO MEGACON TAMPA BAY™ TO SUPPORT HURRICANE IRMA RELIEF EFFORTS - SEPTEMBER 29 TO OCTOBER 1

Tampa Bay, FL – September 14, 2017 – MegaCon™, the Southeast’s fan convention, has announced Comic Book Legend Stan Lee will appear at MegaCon Tampa Bay to meet his fans and support Hurricane Irma relief in Florida. For the next 2,000 MegaCon Tampa Bay tickets sold online, the convention will donate $5 per ticket to Feeding Florida, a statewide network of food banks working on the ground to provide families impacted by Hurricane Irma with food and emergency supplies.

“The generous support of the MegaCon Tampa Bay community will allow Feeding Florida to provide necessary supplies to our families directly impacted by Hurricane Irma,” said Robin Safley, Executive Director of the Feeding Florida. “Partnerships like this allow our statewide network of food banks to continue to support every community and provide many of the front-line services required during response and recovery efforts.”

“Florida is in need of some cheering up and what better person to do that than the one and only Stan Lee! We are excited to be bringing Stan to Tampa Bay for the first time and to work with him to support those communities impacted by Hurricane Irma.” says Andrew Moyes, Vice President of FanExpo HQ.

In light of the recent natural disaster, Stan Lee will auction off experiences and items that money cannot buy, including a one-on-one meal with Stan The Man himself, and artwork from his personal collection. The auction will happen on Friday, September 29 during his panel at MegaCon Tampa Bay. You have to be in the room to bid!

Stan Lee’s personal auction contributions, combined with the funds raised from the ticket drive, ensure MegaCon Tampa Bay and their fans will donate an estimated $20,000 to Feeding Florida’s hurricane relief efforts.

Three-day passes, as well as single day tickets starting at just $25, are available at www.megacontampabay.com/tickets. For news, guest announcements and more, please visit www.megacontampabay.com.
